# Hamming

Ask Hamming about your data in plain words — "which runs failed last week,
and on what step?" — and watch it work out the answer.

## Where to ask

| Surface | Where | What it can reach |
|---|---|---|
| Console | **Sessions** | devices you attach to the session (**Add device**), and your workspace's cloud data |
| Computer | **Hamming** in the rail | this device, attached for you; the computer must be signed in to the cloud |
| Slack, Teams | @mention it, or send a direct message | one thread is one session; Hamming posts its reply when it has finished |

The chips above the message box are the devices this session can reach. `×`
detaches one. Hamming cannot see a device that is not attached.

## What it can do

| Ask for | Hamming |
|---|---|
| a number or a list | queries runs, channels and connected databases, and answers with a table |
| a chart | runs the query, then shows the chart. **Save Chart** keeps it, on a dashboard if you like |
| a procedure or a stop condition | drafts the Trellis document |
| context from your other tools | searches [Trace](https://phloem.ai/docs/ai/trace/) and names the record it used |
| how Phloem works | reads this guide |

If your question is unclear, it asks back with choices.

## Approvals

The mode under the message box sets what Hamming may do without asking:

| Mode | Means |
|---|---|
| **Ask** | Confirm before writes or side effects (the default) |
| **Auto** | Runs routine work without asking |
| **Read-only** | Explore only — never writes |

When a step needs you, the reply pauses on **Approval needed** and shows the
exact command. Choose **Approve & run** or **Deny**. Even in **Auto**, anything
destructive or reaching outside the session still pauses.

**Hamming access** on each connector's page sets what Hamming may do with it
without asking. Each capability shows **Always on**, **Allowed**, **Denied** or
**Awaiting your Allow**; **Allow org-wide** grants it.

> **Note:** Hamming never drives hardware outputs. Commands to an instrument
> run only inside a deployed Trellis setup, whatever a grant says.

## Stop and steer

- **Stop** ends the current reply. It is marked *Stopped.*
- A message you send while Hamming works waits in **Queue**, then joins the
current reply. You can remove it until it is taken.
- **Attach files** adds files to a message.

## Sessions

Each conversation is a session, saved with its full history and named by its
first message. **New chat** starts one and **Search sessions** finds one. Each
session's menu has **Pin**, **Copy link** and **Delete**.
