# Add footage and line it up with your data

Import a video clip as a camera channel, lined up so each frame plays at the
moment it was filmed.

## Before you start

- The video file, on the machine running Phloem Computer — `.mp4`, `.mov`,
  `.mkv`, `.webm`, `.avi` and more.
- The test's data, already recorded on this machine.
- A moment both show, like a flash, a light coming on or a valve step.

## Steps

1. Open **Inputs**, press **Add input**, and choose **Video file**.
2. Press **Choose footage** and pick the clip. A badge reading `decodes`
means it can import, with its size once imported. Any other badge says why
   not.
3. Under **Align against**, pick a channel that shows the moment. The most
recently recorded one is picked for you.
4. Find the moment on the trace. Pick a window with **10s**, **1m**, **10m**
   or **1h**, and step with ◀ ▶.
5. Click the moment on the trace.
6. Step the footage to the frame that shows it, with ◀ ▶ under the picture or
the slider. The line beside the buttons says how far off the footage sits.
7. Press **Pin this frame**. It reads `pinned`, good to one frame.
8. Press **Import**.

No recorded data yet? **Import unaligned** imports the clip without a pin,
starting now.

## Check it worked

The pane reads `imported … frames onto …`. The clip appears under
**Imported footage** with its frame count and start time. Open **Replay** at
that moment to watch it beside your data.

> **Note:** To re-align a clip, press **Remove** and import the file again.
> The time is written onto each frame, so there is no offset to change later.
