# Runs

A run is a named stretch of recording. Start one on Live, find it later in
Replay or on the console's **Runs** page.

## Record a run

1. On **Live**, type a name in **Name this run** (optional).
2. Press **Record**. The button reads **Recording** while it runs.
3. Press it again to stop. A note confirms *Run 13 saved · 4m 12s*.

**Record** is disabled until a source is connected. With no name, a run is
known by when it started.

The arrow beside **Record** (**Recording options**) opens
**Recording settings…** and **Past runs**.

## Recording settings

**Recording settings…** opens the **Recording** sheet for the active project.

### Before recording

**Add question** picks one of your workspace's run fields. Answers are kept with
the run and written into its files. Open a question to set:

| Setting | Choices |
|---|---|
| **At Record** | **Ask each time** · **Fixed value** |
| **Required** | on or off |
| **Default** / **Value** | the answer filled in for you |

With questions set, **Record** shows them first. A blank required field reads
**Needed to start**. Run fields are defined on the console's **Runs** page,
**Fields** tab, or with `phloem field`.

### After recording

Turn on **Save files automatically** to write files when each run ends. Off,
you export runs from **Past runs** when you need them.

| Setting | Choices |
|---|---|
| Folder | **Choose** a folder |
| Formats | **TDMS** · **CSV** · **CSV · one file** · **CSV · long** · **Parquet** · **MCAP** (those this device offers) |
| **Split** (under **More**) | **One file** · **By time** (min) · **By size** (MB) |
| **Rate** | **Every sample**, or a lower rate in Hz |
| **CSV** | column separator, decimal separator, decimals |
| **Name pattern** | placeholders such as `{Project}` and `{Year}`; **Next file** previews the name |

**Recent files** lists what was written, with **Show in folder**. Press **Save**
to keep changes.

## Find a run in Replay

Open **Replay** and the **runs** tab on the left. Runs are grouped by day,
newest first, for the active project.

- **Filter runs** — match by name.
- **Filter by tag** — runs holding an event or command, from **Events** and
  **Commands**.
- Click a run to show its window.

Each row's **More** menu:

| Item | Does |
|---|---|
| **Download…** | opens the export sheet on this run. See [Export data](https://phloem.ai/docs/review/export/). |
| **Send to cloud…** | sends what only this device holds |
| **Release local data…** | keeps the run; its samples may be pruned when the disk budget is full. **Upload first** sends it before releasing. |
| **Delete run…** | removes a manual run from this device's list and the cloud's |

A recipe run cannot be deleted, only released. A run still recording cannot be
deleted.

## Runs in the console

The **Runs** page lists every device's runs, newest first. Tabs: **Runs**,
**Recipes**, **Fields**.

| Filter | Choices |
|---|---|
| **When** | **Last 7 days** · **Last 30 days** · **Last 90 days** · **All time** |
| **Device** | **All devices**, or one |
| **Project** | **All projects**, or one |
| **Recipe** | **Any recipe**, or one |
| **Unit** | a unit name prefix |
| **Latest per unit** | one row per unit, its latest attempt |
| **Field** | a run field and its value |

Click a unit to see every attempt on it. Open a recipe for its measurements,
worst first.

A run's page has **Copy link**, **Open in SQL** and **Download data**. A recipe
run adds tabs **Summary**, **Measurements**, **Evidence** and **Recipe**. Its
**Data** section says whether the run is in the cloud.

> **Note:** A run appears in the console once it syncs. See [Sync](https://phloem.ai/docs/workspace/sync/).
