The Phloem cloud — nothing to install

Lets you and Hamming query spreadsheets and data files in Google Drive with SQL, and lets Hamming search your Docs and PDFs.

What Phloem reads

  • CSV, TSV, Excel (.xlsx, .xls), JSON and Parquet files, and Google Sheets, in the files and folders you pick, including subfolders. Each file is one table.
  • Each file's columns, listed in Trace
  • Google Docs, PDFs, and text and Markdown files, through Drive's own search

What you need

  • A Google account that can open the files
  • Your consent to read-only access to Drive and Sheets

Connect

  1. In the console, open Connectors, choose Add connector, then Google Drive.
  2. Choose Sign in with Google. Your browser goes through your Phloem account to Google, where you approve read-only access, then back to the console.
  3. On Select Files, pick the files and folders to connect.
  4. On Save Connection, name the connection and save it.

What Hamming can do

  • Run SQL over the connected files: query, sample rows, count rows, list columns
  • Search Google Docs, PDFs and text files by content, returning titles, links, and a short excerpt from a Google Doc

Nothing it does changes your Drive.

Notes

  • A table is named after its file: lowercase, extension dropped, other characters turned into underscores (Q3 Results.xlsx → q3_results). Files with the same name get _1, _2, … .
  • Only the first sheet of an Excel file or Google Sheet is read. To query every tab, use the Google Sheets connector.
  • Files are read from Drive at each query, so results match the current file.
  • On the connector's page, All files & folders syncs the whole Drive, including new files, instead of the picked ones.
  • Document search covers every file the Google account can see, not only the ones you picked.
  • If Phloem loses access, choose Reconnect on the connector's page and sign in again.
